Criminal Street Gangs Overview

Course #: MCD 0149

This course is designed for the uniformed patrol officer or investigator who has had LIMITED experience with street gangs. The course will acquaint the officer with the history and organization of gangs, legal definitions, gang identifiers (including colors, symbols, hand signs, graffiti, etc.), criminal activities, documentation, and officer safety.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify and classify gang members and associates.
  • Identify the history of gang alliances and rivalries, and the criminal activity used by gangs to fund gang operations.
  • Identify investigative techniques which will lead to the successful documentation and prosecution of criminal street gang members.
  • Identify officer safety practices critical for street gang encounters.

Target Audience: Active military, active law enforcement, and criminal justice professionals

Course Duration: 16 hours
