Sexual assault cases where ingestion of drugs renders the person intoxicated, with memory loss or potentially unconscious, whether willfully or unknowingly taken, are difficult at best. Officers should conduct a very deliberate investigation to maximize the possibility of apprehension and prosecution. This course will address the issues related to drug facilitated sexual assault investigations, the victims, the 40-plus drugs utilized, toxicology, symptomatology, evidence, suspects, interviews, use of expert witnesses, and prevention strategies.
Course Objectives :
- Gain an awareness of the magnitude and issues surrounding drug facilitated sexual assault.
- Identify techniques for investigating drug facilitated sexual assault.
- Identify the drugs and strategies used by offenders of drug facilitated sexual assault.
- Describe the characteristics and effects of the drugs commonly used.
- Develop an awareness of toxicology, field testing and laboratory testing considerations.
- Describe the importance of prompt search warrants and thorough evidence collection.
- Describe drug facilitated sexual assault prevention strategies.
