Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault Investigations

Sexual assault cases where ingestion of drugs renders the person intoxicated, with memory loss or potentially unconscious, whether willfully or unknowingly taken, are difficult at best. Officers should conduct a very deliberate investigation to maximize the possibility of apprehension and prosecution. This course will address the issues related to drug facilitated sexual assault investigations, the victims, the 40-plus drugs utilized, toxicology, symptomatology, evidence, suspects, interviews, use of expert witnesses, and prevention strategies.

Course Objectives :

  • Gain an awareness of the magnitude and issues surrounding drug facilitated sexual assault.
  • Identify techniques for investigating drug facilitated sexual assault.
  • Identify the drugs and strategies used by offenders of drug facilitated sexual assault.
  • Describe the characteristics and effects of the drugs commonly used.
  • Develop an awareness of toxicology, field testing and laboratory testing considerations.
  • Describe the importance of prompt search warrants and thorough evidence collection.
  • Describe drug facilitated sexual assault prevention strategies.
